Functionnally Characterized Endothelial Cells for Cardiovascular Biology Research

Endothelium is a thin layer of specialized epithelium, comprising a simple squamous layer of cells that line the interior surface of blood vessels, forming an interface between the circulating blood in the lumen and the rest of the vessel wall. Endothelial cells line the entire circulatory system from the heart to the smallest capillary. Endothelium of the heart chambers are termed as endocardium. Blood and lymphatic capillaries are composed of a monolayer of endothelial cells. Endothelial cells are involved in many processes of vascular biology, including: Vasoconstriction & Vasodilatation, hence the control of blood pressure, blood clotting; Atherosclerosis; Angiogenesis; Inflammation; etc. Endothelial cells also control passage of materials and the transit of white blood cells into and out of the bloodstream. Highly differentiated endothelium performs specific filtering functions. Examples are endothelial structures in the renal glomerus and the blood-brain barrier.
